'Tails of the Painted Cats' is a fundraising event for the Cat Care Society in Lakewood, a nonprofit organization established to improve the quality of life for homeless, injured and abused cats in the Denver metropolitan area.

Currently the litter of eye-catching cat statues is on a two-month tour of the metro area.

'This is our second year doing this fundraiser, and it’s been a lot of fun,' said Suellen Scott, CCS director of development. 'The cats are amazing to look at.'

The larger-than-life cats created by Colorado artists will be on display 608 p.m. Friday, June 29, during a wine-and-cheese reception in the gallery’s outdoor garden, 3707 W. 73rd Ave. Tickets are $10 [per person donation at the door]."

Extra Dirt: 'Give Your Plants a Fishy Treat'

Quoting from the e-newsletter of the National Home Gardening Club:

"Want to give your garden a nutritious boost? Go fish!...

Made by Bell Aquaculture (the nation's largest yellow perch farm), the fertilizer is garden- and people-safe and meets USDA specifications for organic growing. It promises faster greening and root establishment, and more intense, longer-lasting blooms. It's sold in liquid form, so it's easy to apply."

More From the Suburban Jungle: 'What Happens When You Don't Fertilize Your Tomato Plants'

The Suburban Jungle's Angela Maas talks tomato plants, fish fertilizer (Bell Aquaculture's Fish Rich) and Raspberries in her June 6th posting:

"If you've ever wondered whether fertilizer was really important to the health of your plants, let me show you an experiment that I've been running in my garden this year.

I intended to grow 14 tomato plants, but when I bought plants I wound up with 18. So I planted my usual 14 and then put the other 4 in a separate location.

Since they were not sharing the same plot of dirt, I thought this was a great time to experiment.

I fertilized all of the tomato plants at planting time. I planted them all at the same depth and have watered them at the same levels consistently since planting.

After the initial fertilizer, I stopped fertilizing the four separate plants and kept on feeding the others every two weeks. I fertilize all of my other plants with a low concentration of fish fertilizer every few weeks."

GEN Feature: 'Global Bioclusters Vie for Dominance'...Colorado ranks 12th in GEN's Top 15 Biotechnology Clusters

Quoting from the June 1 article by Alex Philippidis:

"The U.S. continues to enjoy the world’s largest biopharma industry by establishments (48,059; Battelle); public-company revenues ($61.6 billion in 2010; Ernst & Young); size of prescription-drug market ($307 billion; IMS); jobs (1.42 million; Battelle); venture capital ($4.733 billion last year; MoneyTree Report); R&D research (just over $100 billion in private and public spending); and patents (6,601 within classes 424, 435, and 514 last year; USPTO).

So Uncle Sam remains biopharma’s anchor—or more accurately, two anchors. California and Massachusetts are the top states in biopharma jobs, companies, venture capital raised, NIH grant funding awarded, and patents granted."

BCBR: 'Drug race lures local companies to fast lane'

Quoting from the June 8th article by Beth Potter:

"Merck & Co. Inc. and Amgen Inc. — two global pharmaceutical companies with operations in the Boulder Valley — appear to be on the front lines of the new and often-stealthy world of researching biosimilar drugs.

Virtually all major drug companies, including Merck and Amgen, are racing to create biosimilar drugs, after the federal government said in 2010 that it would create a quicker path to approval for such drugs as part of the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act...

Pharmaceutical companies have become involved in biosimilar research to protect themselves, said Holli Riebel, executive director of the Colorado Bioscience Association, an industry group in Denver.

'They (pharmaceutical companies) have made huge investments in developing biologics, which are complex molecule (drugs) that are more expensive to produce,' Riebel said.

Analysts expect that global sales of biosimilar drugs to grow to $3.7 billion in 2015, according to Datamonitor, a business research firm with offices in New York and London."

2012 Class of 'Boettcher Investigators' Announced

The Boettcher Foundation Board of Trustees has released the names of the three early-career scientists selected for the third class of Boettcher Investigators in the Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Program.

Timothy W. Schultz, President and Executive Director of the Boettcher Foundation, said "Through this program, the Boettcher Foundation has been able to bring resources to an area where funds are currently lacking and where federal and private research programs provide limited support. Early-career investigators quite frequently have a difficult time securing a first opportunity at an independent research effort that will move them out of the laboratory of their mentors and onto their own new and exciting areas of discovery."

The 2012 (third) Class of Boettcher Investigators in the Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Program includes:

* Harald Junge, Ph.D. , University of Colorado at Boulder, Retinal Vascular Development and Disease

* Matthew Kennedy, Ph.D., University of Colorado – Anschutz Medical Campus, Molecular Mechanisms of Alzheimer's Pathology

* Chad G. Pearson, Ph.D., University of Colorado – Anschutz Medical Campus, Organization of the Microtubule Cytoskeleton for Cell Division and Signaling

With the addition of the 2012 Class, there are now fourteen Boettcher Investigators conducting research in the following Colorado institutions: University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado State University, National Jewish Health and Colorado School of Mines.
