Bell Aquaculture's Yellow Perch Farm Is 1st In Indiana To Receive 'Excellence in Progressive Farm Practice' Award

Indiana Lt. Governor Rebecca S. Skillman and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) have recognized Bell Aquaculture LLC for excellence in progressive farm practices. The announcement is made by Norman McCowan, President & CEO, who says Bell Aquaculture recently completed the voluntary ISDA Certified Livestock Producer Program (CLPP) in order to qualify for the review and is the first aquaculture facility in Indiana and one of only a few in the nation to receive this type of designation.

"We are thrilled that our operation has received this recognition," McCowan says. "The yellow perch that we’re raising, the Bell Perch™, is a higher quality product from the standpoint that there is no real possibility of contaminants entering into their food chain during their growth. We have absolute control over our water supply, since they are raised in-house there is no opportunity for bird predation, pesticides or herbicides to get into the flesh of the fish that you and I might sit down to eat.”

Joseph Decuis, First Indiana Restaurant Invited to Serve at New York's Prestigious James Beard House, Selects Bell Perch™

When guests sit down to dine at New York's prestigious James Beard house tonight, Bell Aquaculture Bell Perch™ will be on the menu in the "Perch Ceviche with Crispy Rice Cake, Lime Air & Chili Pepper" hors d’oeuvres offering. The announcement is made by Norman McCowan, Bell Aquaculture's President & CEO, who says, "We've simply been on cloud nine since Joseph Decuis' Executive Chef Aaron Butts advised we'd be on the menu at their James Beard House event. We just can't contain our Indiana pride."

Butts explains, "We partner with Bell Aquaculture regularly, as one of the Indiana 'Like Minded Farms,' sharing our belief that quality is more important than mass-produced foods, and that family farming is in the blood. Each of our partners believe in natural, drug-free, humane, practices. We’re proud to use these Indiana farm-raised products to bring excellent tasting, healthy food to diner's plates – both at our restaurant and at their homes." As reported in Fort Wayne's The News-Sentinel, "The man who set things in motion for the invitation is John Garr, a resident of Converse [IN] and frequent patron at Joseph Decuis. Garr, who says he loves good food, has been a member of the James Beard Foundation for years and attends events there three to four times a year. On one visit, he told Izabela Wojcik of the foundation about Joseph Decuis. That led to a phone conversation between her and Butts and eventually to the invitation."

A participating winery tour:

Garfield Estates
Over the last 8 years, Garfield Estates transformed the historic farm they purchased in early 2000 into a state-of-the-art winery and state vineyard. They acquired Garfield Estates from the granddaughter of the family that originally homesteaded the land well over 100 years ago. From the very beginning they wanted to create a premium winery while also retaining the historic aspects of this property. Their winery is renovated from the original barn and incorporates this historic building into a modern winemaking facility. Currently they have 11 acres planted with five different varieties of grapes: Syrah, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscat Ottonel.

Two Rivers Winery
Nestled between the gateways of the Colorado National Monument is our family operated winery. Although Two Rivers Winery and the Chateau are relatively new, they are both becoming Grand Junction’s Newest Tradition. The entire project was built literally from the ground up on 15 acres of vacant land in 1999.

D’Vine Wine
D’Vine Wine is a boutique winery specializing in custom wines made from the highest quality varietals. By the glass or by the bottle our vintners will guide you through the process of customizing your very own wine. D’Vine Wine, your personal winery is truly a unique experience for the wine novice or the wine expert. Our winery produces many award winning wines from the finest juices. Starting from the juice, rather than growing our own grapes, allows us to offer a wide variety of wines from the bold reds, to crisp whites, to fruit and dessert wines.

Balistreri Vineyards
Balistreri Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery dedicated to making high quality wine. The winery was licensed in 1998 and they released their first vintage in February of 2000. Their wines are primarily made with vinifera varietal grapes purchased from growers in the Grand Valley Viticultural Area located in Western Colorado. Select wines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Muscat are produced with grapes from their own Denver Vineyard. Their winemaker John Balistreri combines both traditional wine-making methods and modern technology to produce award winning wines.

Verso Cellars
Founded in 2001, Verso Cellars is Colorado’s largest producing vineyard of cabernet sauvignon grapes. Fifteen acres of certified rootstock purchased from Sonoma Grapevines Nursery in California were planted in the spring of 2001on their 19.22 acre parcel in East Orchard Mesa. The cabernet grapes are of the highest quality and consist of a distinctive blend of six clones which when made into wine results in lovely combinations yielding unique wines.
